Official Opening Ceremony

Today we had the opening ceremony at the open air theatre in Bautzen.

It is an open area within the old castle grounds. Bautzen is just over 1000 years old.

There were speeches with a professional interpreter and those UN style headphones for us to hear the translation.

We were all decked out in uniform and looked pretty good.

Then there was a play -- one of the local legends that was entertaining although a little hard to follow with the translation.

This was followed by a tour of the city with a guide then a lunch and reception.

After the official part of the day was over, Keith, Mitch, Swaantje, David, Michael, Peter and I went to the Open Class Nationals to see what was happening. Swaantje's friend Helge was competing with his partner Michel Waibel in their ASH-25E "3F".

Also competing were several Etas, including one flown by Uli Schwenk (who you may recognise from the NZ video from the World Championships in Omarama, where he was 2nd in Open Class).

Michael achieved his dream of sitting in an Eta (but not his dream of flying in it). Peter also had a turn. Thanks Bruno for allowing the Conway kids into your glider.

We joined them for the mid-contest dinner (more like a feast). It was a buffet with roast pork, chicken, and heaps of other rally yummy things and we all ate too much! There was also a singer and musicians who were quite good.
