• Router A

• Virtual address is 192.168.1.254 – Hosts on this network use that as their default gateway.

• GigabitEthernet0/1 is used to exchange heartbeats. “Private” (sniffers could see auth)

• There's an election process to work out which router is 192.168.1.254 if they're both “up”.

• Failover is 100% transparent and almost instant.
