RIP

• RIP is a simplistic IGP – Use it if you can't use anything else.

• Every 30 seconds, each RIP router broadcasts its entire routing table. Any other RIP router which receives the broadcast thereby works out paths between hosts.

• RIP routes have simplistic metrics (hop counts). Load sharing isn't normally possible because links with less-than-optimal metrics are unused.

• Free implementations: routed, gated
